Microsoft announces WMP
Microsoft has introduced Windows Media Photo (WMP), described as "a new file format for continuous-tone still images that surpasses the limitations of existing image formats." It uses TIFF-like IFD's, but appears intended in its overall design to compete with JPEG and JPEG 2000. The preliminary specification is freely downloadable.
