Index of file format extensions
Here's a site with the grandiose title of "Almost every file format in the world." It only lists extensions and format names, without any pointers to further information on the formats, but still could be a useful reference.
It's missing some commonly used extensions, such as WAR, a variant of JAR used with Java web applications, and APP, used for Macintosh OS X applications.
