Allume image compression announcements

(Edited 14-Jan-05, 2:25 PM)

Allume Systems, Inc., has made two related announcements concerning image compression. One of these, if I understand it correctly, would use JPEG format, but replace the back-end compression which is done after the DCT compression with a more efficient scheme. The other is a completely new image file format, called Stuffit Image Format, or SIF.

The catch? This will be a patented technology.

Here's the link to the white paper (PDF) talking about the format. This paper misleadingly calls the new compression "lossless," but a closer look shows that this only means that it doesn't further degrade the image beyond the already lossy compression.

And here's lots of discussion and speculation on Slashdot.
