An example of vanishing formats

Just a little example of how file format obsolescence can sneak up on you:

RKOV reports that Office 2003 SP3 has quietly dropped support for Word 2 files. There's nothing unique to Microsoft about this phenomenon. Probably they dropped support because there was some bug in ancient, uncommented code that they couldn't fix with a reasonable amount of effort. Every time something like this happens, someone's old files suddenly become useless.

Comments:
They are dropping support for PowerPoint files as recent as PowerPoint 97. I suspect this is security related, but not certain. I need to go find all of my archives of PowerPoint slide sets and convert them though, because I have some that old or older in my archives.

Uh, which means I should probably get everything out of old ARC compressed sets and upgrade to Zip everywhere too ... heh.
