Microsoft submits Open XML as standard
Microsoft has announced (disable cookies to avoid registration hassles) that it will submit its Open XML format to ECMA for acceptance as a standard. The next version of Microsoft Office will be based on Open XML, rather than on the undocumented and changeable formats previously used.
This is a clear step forward for Microsoft in the interoperability and longevity of the documents created by its applications. However, questions linger about the patent status of Open XML.
